Is Your Room Visually Balanced? (from the Fort Lauderdale City News, Nov. 2015)

Have you ever walked into a room that seemed to tilt to one side though the floor was level? Having worked with many clients, I’ve often seen this situation. The problem is visual weight. Our eyes assign greater weight to large objects with a high degree of tone or color contrast. Conversely, our eyes interpret small objects or objects with little tone contrast as weighing less or having less of an impact.

Parts of empty rooms may appear heavier because of architectural features. Picture windows, multiple sliding doors, built-in bookshelves and dark painted walls look heavier than an unbroken expanse of lightly-colored wall. Similarly, a dramatic window treatment looks heavier than a simple one.

Establish a focal point in the room. Choose a structural element, like a picture window, a tall piece of furniture, or a window treatment. Then place your furniture around the room to enhance the focal point.

Place furniture based on its visual weight. Install larger pieces first. Next, place smaller furnishings to easily fill the room enhancing visual balance.

Arranging furnishings this way ensures visual balance. As a professional designer, I know how to help you achieve this balance in each room of your home. Let me help you do it right the first time. I’m here to assist you.
